Life with a toddler, oh me, oh my. Or, as Nathan would say, "Gooness Gay-shus." He has been giving me a run for my money. I am constantly second-guessing myself and my methods. Everything was running pretty smoothly for a while, but he has recently been rehashing all ground that we have covered since he was nine months old!!! I don't know if my parenting methods have gone all wrong, or if he is just getting close to two and having to relearn his lessons with his new-found independence.
Anyhoo...Nathan proves constantly his "boyness." Today I had to change a diaper because Nathan managed to shove dirt down into it while playing outside...on purpose. He has also absolutely loved chasing the dogs around the kitchen while on his riding toy. He laughs gleefully as the dogs scurry out of his path. :-( I was lying on the couch this afternoon (Evan and I feel like, um, yucky.), and Nathan jumped on his riding toy and raced into the kitchen. All of the sudden, Monty came running round the corner and leaped onto the couch and curled up. Poor dog. Nathan then came racing around the corner and crashed into the couch. Evan put the dogs outside. :-) I was actually laughing uncontrollably on the couch.
Oh yes, as for the reason why the dogs are inside my house. Saturday I was going to brush Gimli and found a yucky nasty spot under his neck. We felt horrible and thought that maybe his collar had been too tight or something. I cleaned his neck, Evan bathed him (and the Monty-dog), and I put medicine on his neck. We couldn't put his collar on, so we kept him inside. Today I saw another yucky spot on Gimli's face. That could not have been caused by the collar. Nope, Evan took him to the vet (can you believe it?!?!), and the vet said that Gim has eczema and actually had wounded himself by scratching. Poor thick-haired dog in a climate that goes from 40's to 80's and back to 40's again. I guess he got too hot last week or so whenever we had 80-degree weather and he hadn't had a chance to shed his winter coat. Anyway, that's why the dogs are inside. I am very happy to know now that I am not a horrible pet owner. I was feeling really badly about not noticing a too-tight collar.
Back to Nathan. Nathan LOVES having the dogs inside. I think the dogs are enjoying their inside-time a little less lately...for some strange reason. Clues as to their decrease in enjoyment: 1) a certain someone likes to crawl in their crate with them and lie down, 2) a certain someone likes to try to pry their mouths open to make them chew on a stick he has found (yes, I put a stop to it), 3) a certain someone likes to chase them around on his riding toy while squealing at the top of his lungs (I suppose I gave it away with the riding toy, huh?), 4) a certain someone likes to point out various body parts, like eyes, by poking them with his fingers, 5) a certain someone likes pulling their legs while they are lying down just to watch the automatic jerk-back reaction, and 6) a certain someone just loves to be loud in general (this bothers Monty more than Gimli, as does most anything). The silver lining, however, is that the same someone likes to share...his food, his cup, his food-covered hands....
Other things of interest (to me, anyway):
*Nathan says "Natan Dannel" if I come into a room to find him doing something wrong
*Nathan loves buckles right now; he helps me buckle him in his carseat
*Nathan now says "achey-pop" for apricot instead of "apicop" as he used to ??
*Nathan LOVES dried apricots and prunes...which I have to limit, I mean, he's never had a problem with regularity
*Nathan really likes the nursery now, and he is actually GOOD in there!!! I mean, he gets along great with the other kids, something I was worried about considering how he acts sometimes with our neighbor's daughter
*Nathan still loves books and tries to "read" them (I love hearing him say, "Bown beaw, bown beaw, what see? See wed bewd looking me." Translation, "Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see? I see a red bird looking at me.")
*Nathan is a wonderful helper; if only I could find enough things for him to do!!
*The Golden Rule does not help me with Nathan; just because he likes being crawled on does not mean that his little friend likes being crawled on.
Okay, okay. I am extremely long-winded, and I can't even grace this post with a picture because I'm not on my computer. I've been whiling away time while Evan "tries" to study (he has fever, and his finals are tomorrow and Wednesday).
