So, here we go.
Sunday night - Nathan slept all night.
Monday morning - Nathan still had fever, although it was much lower. I was just ready to get him into the doctor. Did I mention that we had ice? Oh yeah, we had ice. The doctor's office was closed for the day because they didn't have power. I even called the other doctor's office and a walk-in clinic; both were closed. I was not a happy camper. Around 11 a.m. our power went out. The house started getting cold. Evan came home, we went to look for a propane heater, and we did not find one. Lowe's was crazy!! So Evan told me that I had to go to Papah's house since my parents were out of town. My son was crying, I was trying to pack, and Evan was just trying to help me get everything ready to go. I felt like we were some kind of refugees or something. Of course, it didn't help that Nathan was probably half-way freaking out because Mommy was stressed; but I didn't know why he was so fussy, and it just made me more worried. Anyway, we packed and left. The roads were fine; I just had to watch for ice chunks flying off big trucks in front of me.
Monday afternoon - Nathan and I arrived at Papah's house, and I called different doctors in town. I finally found one who was able to get Nathan in the next morning. Nathan was just not happy that evening, although his fever only went up to 101 degrees.
Monday night - Nathan slept all night, partly in his bed, partly in Mommy's bed.
Tuesday morning - Nathan had no fever. We got ready and went to the doctor. (Interesting fact - the same doctor who delivered Stephen.) Nathan was acting like he had never been sick in his life. The doctor said his throat looked a little red, and he prescribed an antibiotic for strep throat. He said it was easier to do that than to swab and actually test for the strep throat. I didn't question at the time because I was trying to keep up with a Nathan who didn't really like the doctor messing with him. I called my doctor's office and checked with them. They said I could wait to see if the fever came back if I wanted to. I decided to do that since Nathan hadn't really given me any reason to believe his throat hurt. However, Nathan started fussing when we got home and just wouldn't chill out. I started thinking of all the times over the past weekend that he could've been displaying signs of a sore throat. I called Evan, and we finally decided to just be safe and take the antibiotic.
Tuesday afternoon - I give Nathan the antibiotic, and I notice a rash on his trunk and back. Beautiful!! Just beautiful!! I called Evan and told him to look it up on the internet. Papah pretty much lives in the dark ages when it comes to technology, so I didn't have many options when it came to communication. I only had my prepaid cell phone which I used to stay in touch with my husband. Anyway, he looked it up and came up with roseola - a viral infection in children between 6 months and 2 years that causes a high fever for 3-5 days (one that spikes at night) and ends with a rash that appears when the fever disappears. Hmmm, that sounds vaguely familiar. Of course, the doctor's office in Papah's town said that strep could cause a rash, too, but I don't buy it. We continued the antibiotic just in case, but I still think he didn't have strep. I think he would've let me know if his throat had been hurting.
Wednesday - I was hoping so badly to be able to go home, but our power was still out. Evan had one final Monday night and another on Wednesday night, so he had been studying at this school until late at night then going home and sleeping in our freezing house. The school was nice enough to open up there main hall for all those without power who needed a warm, light place to study. The school even gave them pizza one night. :-) The power did not come back on Wednesday, and when I called the power company they didn't even have record that I had reported our outage on Monday. :-( Nathan was getting a little antsy because it rained all day Wednesday, and there just wasn't much to do. He did like the train and the cows, though. ;-)
Thursday - The weathermen said that it was going to get up to 45 degrees on Thursday, and I figured I should probably get everything out of our refrigerator and head to Mom and Dad's. Evan had taken our chest freezer, filled it with everything from our refrigerator freezer, and plugged it up at our friends' house across the street. Yes, our friends across the street had power. Nathan and I didn't camp out at their house because of his illness; we didn't want to infect their little girl. Anyway, I packed our stuff and headed back home. Evan met me there and helped me get everything together. We threw away a bunch of stuff away before realizing that the only reason our fridge stank was the chicken that had expired (not because it wasn't cold enough) and put the rest in an ice chest with some ice I had brought from Papah's. We worked as quickly as we could because Nathan was getting cold and fussy. I felt badly for him because I know it must be a little weird for him to go to a home that is definitely not warm and cozy and, well, homey. ;-) Once I was packed, Nathan and I came to Mom and Dad's house. Evan came that night. The power came on as he was getting ready to leave. ha
So, that is my story. This week will definitely be high on the "memorability" list. Nathan is doing much better other than a slight cough. He will be very happy to get home, I am sure. The only bad thing is that Christmas is just around the corner, so life is not going to slow down much. Oh, this past week I was going to mail Christmas presents. Just so you know, that did not happen. ;-) Hopefully that will happen next week. I know you guys don't care, but I do. ;-) Okay, I've taken up enough time on the computer. I need to go address Christmas cards.
